As a part of your child’s math program, Rome Catholic School is partnering with The Air Force Research Laboratory’s National Defense Education Program to offer hands-on-learning experiences with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Initiatives) Learning Modules. The goal of the AFRL is to foster a new generation of scientists, mathematicians, engineers and technologists who will one day discover and problem solve in our nation’s defense laboratories. Staff from the mathematics and technology departments of Rome Catholic School took part in a 3-day workshop for training and professional development. Through a Department of Defense grant, Rome Catholic will receive licenses for 100 students(Grades 7-12) to participate in the hands-on learning initiative. Rome Catholic will be using Tabula Digita’s DimensionM Suite of math video games. This educational gaming software allows students to practice key math concepts in a highly interactive, 3-dimensional video gaming environment. RCS’s license agreement allows students access to the math games on school computers. Students also have the ability to download and play the games on a home computer, with your Parent/Guardian permission. With Tabula Digita, RCS has chosen level-appropriate mathematical content aligned to national math standards as well as those of New York State. "Our young digital natives often demonstrate tenacity, creativity, perseverance, and motivation for learning, but often in ways that seem far removed from the traditional classroom and school curriculum. These math games help bridge the gap: the desire to get to the next mission requires an increasing level of gaming and math skills, and by extension, offers motivation for students to grasp and apply math concepts. Students will actively seek resources as they try to reach the next level, asking questions of their classmates and teachers" (http://dimensionm.com/). |

DimensionM™is an immersive video game world that engages students in the instruction and learning of mathematics. Pre-algebra and algebra objectives are covered through a series of missions that bring math into a world that today's students understand. Students become so captivated in solving problems that they forget they're learning but they don't forget what they've learned. http://dimensionm.com/
