New Clubs Proposal

PROPOSAL FOR THE CREATION OF A SCHOOL CLUB STRUCTURE
AT ROME CATHOLIC SCHOOL

 In addition to organized team sports and academic or philanthropic clubs, this proposal seeks to create the opportunity for Rome Catholic students to experience activities which otherwise may not have been accessible.

This will be done through the concept of school clubs.  School clubs allow students of various ages to participate in physical and non-physical activities with school peers under the auspices of an intramural setting. This will also allow the assessment of long-term viability of activities with the interest of only a smaller start-up group without the risk of entering into a Diocese or district wide program.

For the immediate future, however, within the school club structure, competition with other clubs outside of Rome Catholic will not necessarily be required.  This will allow students who otherwise might not attempt a sport or activity previously to grow both mentally, physically, and socially, within a safe, supervised atmosphere.

Below is the proposed process for creating a new club, assessing the success of said club, and approving the continued life of the club.

School clubs would be managed by the Athletic Director and Principal, working jointly with input from the Parent Teacher Group and individuals.

CREATING A NEW CLUB

Any teacher, parent, or student having an interest in starting a new club may obtain a Proposal Form (see following pages) in the office.

After the completed form has been returned to the office, the application goes through the following process:

1.      Review of application by the Athletic Director and Principal in light of the criteria for school clubs.

2.      Meeting with potential sponsor and/or club leaders and the Athletic Director and Principal.

3.      Written recommendation by the Athletic Director to the Principal for acceptance or rejection of the club.

4.      Final written decision by the Principal.

5.      If a club is accepted, the club will be on "pilot" status for two full semesters and a specific plan to begin meeting as a pilot club will be developed and submitted by the club leaders.

NEW CLUB CRITERIA

To be eligible for consideration as a club recognized by Rome Catholic School, a club must meet the following criteria:

§         Evidence of sufficient student interest (i.e., 5 or more students);

§         Availability of at least one (1) appropriate sponsors, who are employed by Rome Catholic School or have approved teacher/coach/safety training;

§         Inclusiveness (i.e., the degree to which the club is designed to appeal to and include all students in accordance with our Mission);

§         No significant duplication of purpose, goals, or activities of an existing school-sponsored club;

§         Activities are primarily centered around and in school grounds;

§         Meetings or activities are voluntary and student-centered;

§         Persons regularly directly involved with the club over the age of 18 will be VIRTUS certified;

§         Regular meetings will be held, consisting of both active and planning (or business) meetings, which may be held concurrently;

§         Meetings and activities must occur during non-instructional time;

§         Meetings or activities do not materially and substantially interfere with the orderly conduct of educational activities within the school, nor are they unlawful or otherwise contrary to the Mission of the school.

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF PILOT STATUS

A group initially approved as a pilot club may be approved for full status as a school-sponsored club upon review demonstrating that it:

1.                  Has been in existence at least one school year (two consecutive semesters);

2.                  Maintains a membership of at least 7 students;

3.                  Has a declaration describing the purpose, goals, and structure of the club;

4.                  Has identified activities;

5.                  Held at least one business meeting held per month, attended by a quorum, consisting of at least two-thirds of the membership;

6.                  Has an identified meeting structure; and

7.                  Has at least two school-employed or approved sponsors.
