Redwings Twirling Club and Pom Clinic

Program Handbook

Why Twirling:

Twirling has gone though a transformation over the past 10 years. Twirlers today incorporate gymnastics, dance (jazz, ballet), and the traditional twirling skills into a new art form.   These changes have opened new doors for twirlers though competitions in groups or as individuals, college scholarships, and travel opportunities. Even beginner and intermediate twirlers will develop lifelong skills in physical fitness, self confidence, responsibility, teamwork, quick thinking and leadership.  Give it a Twirl!

 Twirling at RCS:

Redwings Twirling Club was formed for our students to enhance the team spirit at RCS focusing on twirling and dance technique, as well as building team and group awareness, camaraderie and sportsmanship.

Twirling Taught

Recreational Twirling

Dance Twirl

Novelty Twirl

Pom

Recreational Twirling

This is non-competitive twirling. Students will learn basic baton twirling skills at beginner and intermediate levels.  We will also introduce rhythmic ribbon a cross over skill from gymnastics which twirlers are now using in routines.

Dance Twirl

This is an entertaining type of performance.  Groups can perform using their own music and unique choreography.  Baton skills are important, but not as technical.  The focus is on choreography changes to music while adding eye catching twirling moves.

Novelty Twirl

Performance is based on changing equipment (rhythmic ribbon, hoops, or baton) Emphasis is on audience appeal and unison.  One baton can be used as a portion of the performance.

Pom Clinic

This clinic introduces students to the sport of pom.  They will learn basic arm motions, jumps and dance steps.

 Equipment:

Batons:

Redwings Twirling Club encourages its students to purchase “real” batons.  These silver batons differ from the toy batons, in that they are heavier and twirl better.  Batons can be purchased though the club for $ 17.00.

Baton Measurement- The length should be measured from the armpit to the fingertip.

Poms:

Will be provided by the instructor.

Practices:

Practices will be held in the RCS Gymnasium after school until 3:05 p.m. Coach Jenny will pick up the twirling/pom students from their classroom after school dismisses.  Although your child’s teacher will be informed of your child’s registration in this club, we ask that you also write a note to your child’s teacher at the beginning of each session acknowledging your child’s participation in the program.

Practice Pick-up:

Students can only be picked up in the gymnasium by a parent or permission adult indicated on their registration form.  Any changes to your child’s pick-up schedule or permission adult must be made in writing to the school’s main office.

*All twirling students must complete an After School Program Form. This form needs to be filled out in an event of an emergency, bad weather, or if your permission adult for pick up is running late.

Students are to be picked up at the end of practice within a 10 minute window. (e.g. 3:05 p.m.-3:15 p.m.)  If a student is picked up later than this ten minute window, they will be taken to after school care.

Practices  Clothes:

Redwings Twirling Club students can wear their school uniforms or RCS gym clothes.  Sneakers are preferred, but students can also wear dress shoes with non-slip rubber soles.   Students will not be allowed to practice in boots, bare feet or socks.

Performances and Uniforms:

This club will have two performances, session one performance in December and session two in June.  The club in the past has also performed at area nursing homes, and marched in parades.  All twirling students will be required to wear a uniform for these performances.  This is very important for the overall effect of the routine.  It’s the icing on the cake!

Session One Performance – December

Half-time of a Boy’s Basketball Game

Uniform:

White shirt/ turtle neck

Black pants

Black shoes/sneakers

* Santa hats will be provided.

Session Two Performance- June (second week)

Spring Recital

Uniform:

All students will have a “themed” routine which will require a uniform fee of $ 15.00

Communications:

Practice, performance schedules and any twirling news will be posted on the school’s website www.romecatholic.org located under “Current News,” then click on the “Elementary Sports” icon.  If you do not have access to the internet please see the coach for hard copies.

Quitting the Program:

If your child has registered for a session and has decided not to continue with the program please inform Coach Jenny of your decision by phone, email, or a written note.  Every season the twirling classes fill up quickly and students are placed on a waiting list, this common courtesy will enable a “waiting” students a spot in a class.

If your child misses more than three classes, not due to illness, or given notification why, Coach Jenny will assume your child no longer intends to continue with the program and thus loses their spot in the class.

RCS Pom Club

Program Handbook

Why Pom :

Pom is the modern day version of cheerleading.  It enhances school spirit by utilizing the athleticism of dance and cheer into short, high energy, pom routines.

Pom at RCS:

Pom Club was developed to introduce students’ grades 4-6 to the sport of Pom.  Pom Club will not only focus on dance/cheer, but also on team building and group awareness, camaraderie and sportsmanship.

Dance/cheer experience is not required to be a member--just a strong desire to work hard, and a willingness to learn dancing techniques.

Practices:

Practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays after school until 4:00 p.m. on the second floor atrium located in front of the library.  Practices will focus on dance, chants, conditioning, strength training, and flexibility.

Coach Jenny will pick up Pom Club members from their classroom after school dismissal and will be given time to change into their practice clothes. Students should practice in t-shirts (tucked in), shorts, and hair pulled back out of their face.  No jewelry, hair clips or barrettes are to be worn.  All Pom Club members need to wear their cheer sneakers with socks. No dress shoes, flip flops, or bare feet.

*If a student is not properly dressed for practice he/she will have to sit out of practice because of these safety issues.

Practice Pick-up:

*All Pom Club students must complete an After School Program Form. This form needs to be filled out in an event of an emergency, bad weather, or if your permission adult for pick up is running late.

Students are to be picked up at the end of practice within a 10 minute window. (e.g. 4:00 p.m.-4:10 p.m.)  If a student is picked up later than this ten minute window, they will be taken to after school care.

Attendance Policy:

Members are required to attend all scheduled practices and games, unless prior permission to be absent or to be tardy has been communicated to the coach.  Students can notify the coach by calling, emailing, or explain in person the reason for the absence or tartness before the practice or performance. Students who were absent from school the day of practice or game are automatically excused.

Students who fail to inform the coach of an attendance issue will be in violation of the attendance policy and will result in a verbal warning.  Two violations will result in a written warning.  Three violations of the attendance policy will result in a temporary exclusion for a set performance date.  The fourth violation will result in the student being asked to leave the Pom Club Program.

Cancellations:

Notifications to all pom club members will be made if practices or games are cancelled.  If school is closed due to weather, practice will also be cancelled.   If this falls on a game day each member will assume the game is still on unless you are notified by the coach.

Communications:

Practice, performance schedules and any Pom Club news will be posted on the school’s website www.romecatholic.org located under “Current News,” then click on the “Elementary Sports” icon.  If you do not have access to the internet please see the coaches for hard copies.

The Pom Club will perform at halftime of the boys’ JV or Varsity basketball games.

At each performance the students must:

*wear their complete team uniform

* water bottle

* no jewelry

* hair pulled back into a pony tail (if hair is long)

* no gum

Uniforms and Equipment:

Members are required to wear the RCS Pom Club uniforms for all performances.  This is very important for the overall effect of the routine.  It’s the icing on the cake!  Uniforms are to be worn only for performances, fundraising events, or for events in which prior permission by school administration has been given.  (e.g spirit wear day or pep rallies)

Shoes

All RCS Pom Club members are required to wear their performances footwear.  Performance footwear is to be worn only to practices and games.

Pom Families:

RCS Pom Club can not do this without you!  Families play a vital role in the success.  It’s fun and it is a great way to meet other people whose children are involved in the sport of Pom.

We will need Pom Club Parents to make phone calls   We also welcome parents/guardians to share their special talents with the club.  (e.g. computer skills, sewing, photography, audio, video etc)

School Spirit

Pom Club will not only perform, but be facilitators in creating school pride at RCS.  Pom Club will “get the word out,” about school spirit though the creation of signs, posters and attending special school events.  Pom Club will also play a major role at RCS pep rallies and assist Pom Line during Spirit Week Events.

Fundraising

The Pom Club will have opportunities throughout the school year to raise funds to defer the costs of uniforms and equipment.  Members of the Pom Club are expected to help out at these events.
